ROSACEA

Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects mainly adults. It is a inflammatory and chronic skin condition that causes redness on the facial area. This skin condition causes small, red puss filled bumps or pustules on the face. There is no know cause for this skin condition. Many people who have it are unaware that they have rosacea and mistake it for other skin problems such as acne. Although anyone may develop rosacea, you may be more likely to develop the condition if you are light skinned, experience frequent flushing or blushing, are between the ages of 30-60, and have a family history.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a progressive skin condition that will need to be treated by a professional as soon as possible. If left untreated it will worsen over time. You will find that with this skin condition you may have flare ups for periods of weeks, even months. It then will calm down before flaring up once again. This is an ongoing process with this condition if left untreated. With professional help and treatment you can keep rosacea under control. Although there is no known cure for rosacea, it can be controlled with proper treatment by reducing the signs and symptoms.

Rosacea is usually triggered by activities and the environment such as exercise, sun exposure, cold or hot weather, and wind. Certain foods, drinks, and medication can also trigger this skin condition. Avoiding spicy foods and alcohol may help minimize the appearance of this skin condition. Limiting exposure to the harsh environments of mother nature and wearing a sunscreen will help reduce outbreaks. Use a mild soap or cleanser and avoid any harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin such as an astringent.

For many people rosacea is a life disruptive disorder due to the change in ones appearance. It can change the way one may feel about themselves. It lowers ones self-confidence and self-esteem and may even change ones social behavior. Rosacea can make a person feel unatractive and may inhibit ones social life. It may cause one to avoid public contact and may even affect their professional relations. Some have even found that this skin condition has caused them to become depressed due to the way they look. Seeking professional help can help minimize the appearance of rosacea and give you your life back.

Rosacea usually appears in three phases:

The first phase is called pre-rosacea. In this phase you will have the tendency to flush or blush quit easily. It will then progress and begin to cause redness in the face. The redness usually will begin in the nose area and will then work its way out to other areas of the face. Extreme blushing will occur and last longer than a regular blush.

The second phase is called vascular rosacea. As the skin condition worsens small blood vessels on the nose and cheeks begin to swell and become more noticeable. The skin may also become overly sensitive.

The third and last phase is called inflammatory rosacea. In this phase small red bumps or pustules will appear and persist on the skin. They will spread across the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin areas.

Symptoms of Rosacea

- redness on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead
- bumps or pustules
- small visible blood vessels on the face
- watery, irritated eyes
- red, bulbous nose
- tendency to flush or blush easily

If you find that any of these symptoms may be affecting you, seek a skin care professional as soon as possible. You will need to be properly diagnosed and treated for the best results. Remember, there is no cure for rosacea but you can keep it under control. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment the more effective the outcome will be.
